Vanity

Vanity

2009
Wood, black glass, milk paint.
32 x 18 x 10 in.

One day the queen asked her mirror:
“Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
Who in this land is fairest of all?”
It answered:
“You, my queen, are fair; it is true.
But Snow-White is a thousand times fairer than you.”

Little Snow-white by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

Being true to oneself is not an easy task – Vanity is a true mirror, a non-reversing mirror that presents its subjects as they would be seen by others. However, rather than a reflective mirror, I have used black glass to create a mysterious dark hole with its double black reflection. I wish to challenge the complexity of our minds by using simple recognizable elements presented in an alternate configuration.
