Communion
2025
Communion was created to capture the profound silence and presence of the individual at the table. The water’s surface symbolizes the table, reflecting the tension and beauty of that moment. The original installation, presented in 1997 based on my experience at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in 1996. It was inspired by the concept of “Shaker table fellowship”—the tradition of welcoming strangers, sharing meals, and observing silent grace. This resonated deeply with me. Except for the handmade clock at its center, the original installation was destroyed. The sound of the clock’s ticking continues to evoke powerful memories. At the request of ICA Boston to be included in the show Believers: Artists and the Shakers, I have dedicated myself to recreating this installation, offering a contemporary interpretation of communion.
