Vanity
2009
Wood, black glass, milk paint.32 x 18 x 10 in. One day the queen asked her mirror:“Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who in this land is fairest of all?”It answered:“You, my queen, are fair; it is true. But Snow White is a thousand times fairer than you.”- Little Snow White by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Being true to oneself is not an easy task – vanity is a true mirror, a non-reversing mirror that presents its subjects as they would be seen by others. However, rather than a reflective mirror, I have used black glass to create a mysterious dark hole with its double black reflection. I wish to challenge the complexity of our minds by using simple recognizable elements presented in an alternate configuration.
